PetDesk combines user-friendly client engagement tools with a top-rated pet parent app to simplify veterinary clinic operations and strengthen client relationships. The company is expanding its data engineering capacity to support a growing product portfolio and rising analytical demand.
About the Role
PetDesk is seeking an experienced hands-on technical lead to drive data engineering initiatives within its growing Sri Lanka-based engineering group. In this contractor role, you will take ownership of technical direction, pipeline architecture, and data modeling while collaborating closely with international teams.
What You Will Do
- Lead technical design for assigned workstreams and produce written proposals prior to implementation.
- Build and maintain production data models and pipelines using dbt Core, Snowflake SQL, and Python.
- Investigate raw source data directly to determine modeling requirements and join logic.
- Review pull requests daily to uphold rigorous modeling conventions and performance standards.
- Manage pipeline reliability, proactively diagnosing failures and configuring alerts.
- Mentor local engineers through pairing and design feedback to foster platform ownership.
- Coordinate daily across regions to translate business questions into actionable technical scopes.
What You Need
- At least 8 years of experience in data or software engineering, including 2+ years as a technical lead, architect, or owner of a major data platform.
- Expert SQL skills, including analytical functions and cloud data warehouse performance tuning, with Snowflake strongly preferred.
- Deep production experience with dbt Core, encompassing multi-repo structures, testing strategies, macros, and incremental models.
- Strong Python skills for pipeline development, API integrations, and orchestration using Airflow or similar tools.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret raw, undocumented source systems and design robust models independently.
- Working familiarity with ingestion tooling such as Airbyte or Fivetran, CDC patterns, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
- Experience with Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines like Buildkite or GitHub Actions, and AWS scripting or infrastructure-as-code.
- Clear communication skills in English, with a track record of documenting decisions and elevating engineering standards.
Work Arrangement
- Contractor engagement based in Colombo, collaborating closely with regional and US-based teams.
